Mister Freedom® DEPUTY Britches, 16 Oz. MIDNIGHT denim edition.
FW2020 mfsc TRUCK STOP collection.
Made in Japan.

To complete your Midnight wildcatter tuxedo, we included a new trousers’ pattern in the 2020 Truck Stop line-up.
The MF® Deputy Britches draw from the same design background as the Pioneer Jacket, blending rugged Wild West imagery and dude ranch styles with city slicker fashions, for that “urban cowboy” vibe popular in the 1950s-60s.
Again, we put all kinds of vintage westernwear Americana influences in the MF® blender, and came up with the DEPUTY Britches. The moniker is a quaint reference to State Troopers, aka Smokey Bear in CB lingo, the 1970’s pop culture outlaw trucker’s nemesis.

The western vibe of these trousers is mostly conveyed by the characteristic “cowboy” yoke belt loops and matching rear pocket closure tabs with traditional mother-of-pearl western snaps. The characteristic frogmouth front pocket pattern is a classic detail often seen on early riding apparel. We have played around with this pocket concept in the past, with mfsc oldies such as the MF® Vaqueros,  Buckaroos, or Conductor Slacks.

Our DEPUTY Britches lean more on the fancy tailor-made trousers side than on plain utilitarian garb, but design and silhouette are both subtle enough to not fall into cosplay, unless you opt for a belt buckle the size of a frisbee.

The fabric is an old favorite of ours, the mighty 16 Oz. “Midnight” denim. This hefty dark indigo warp & black weft selvedge twill, milled in Japan, previously appeared on the popular 2015 Caban Peacoat and 2019 Midnight Ranch Blouse & Lot64MD Californian set. The fading and patina potential of this fabric is quite phenomenal, as indigo rubs on car seats and sofas testify.
The pocketing inevitably matches the Midnight Pioneer Jacket lining, and consists of a 100% cotton woven plaid typical of vintage workwear heavy flannels, a fabric initially milled by Sugar Cane Co as shirting material.
For waistband closure, we opted for an original MF®-branded 1950s-style brass snap, recently introduced with the Maverick. Inspired by vintage Levi’s rough-out leather jacket closures, the snap waist button reenforces the 60s-70s vibe of the midnight denim DEPUTY and PIONEER tuxedo.
The use of a zip fly hints at 1960s dude ranch wear, and features a classic vintage-style brass “Gripper Zipper” pull and all-cotton tape.

The Mister Freedom® DEPUTY Britches are designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in Japan in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.

SIZING/FIT:
The DEPUTY Britches in Midnight denim come UN-WASHED (raw) and are cut so that the measurements match the labeling AFTER an initial cold soak/line dry.
We recommend the usual protocol before wearing:

  • Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation (No machine cycle)
  • Washing machine spin dry.
  • Line dry.

Please note that this Midnight denim is a heavy and stiff twill in its raw state, and will dry to an even stiffer state following the above routine. Caused by the re-activated fabric starches necessary at the milling stage, this stiffness is normal, characteristic of raw denim and garments that are not factory-distressed. This initial stiffness will gradually subside with normal wear, and plays an important role in the development of an attractive natural patina overtime.
The DEPUTY Britches Midnight edition are considered true-to-size and feature a classic straight leg, generous waist, mid-high rise and overall comfortable silhouette. I opted for a W30, for a relaxed fit following a cold-soak/line-dry. I am 5.7’’ approx. 150 Lbs.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate measurements. We recommend comparing these measurements to those of a jacket of a similar style that fits you well. This is how we measure.

CARE:
This denim garment is stiff, quite heavy when wet, and bulky, so we do not recommend using a home washing machine for cleaning. Washing cycles will cause unattractive marbling of the denim fabric, and may damage both the garment and the machine, even on delicate setting.
When necessary, we recommend hand-washing. Cold water, mild eco-friendly detergent. Hang dry.
Using a heat dryer may result in excessive and irreversible shrinkage.

Available RAW (unwashed):
Waist 28, 30, 32, 34, 36 and 38.

Available from www.misterfreedom.com, our Los Angeles brick & mortar store, and fine retailers around the World.

Mister Freedom® MFSC Fall 2012 (Part 8): The “FARO BRITCHES”

Faro Britches rig Mister Freedom® ©2012

Mister Freedom® MFSC “FARO BRITCHES”
Men of the Frontier Fall 2012

Wrapping up a busy year and, along with it, our Men of the Frontier collection, here is the final Fall chapter: The FARO BRITCHES.

For these trousers, we have combined our original ‘Britches Chaparral‘ pattern with the linen/cotton HBT selvedge fabric from our ‘Faro Sack Coat” and ‘Faro Waistcoat‘.
I have yet to wear the Faro ‘three piece suit’, ‘Ditto Suit’ style, but I often mix two matching pieces with a contrasting third. For instance Faro sack coat and waistcoat worn with stripe ‘gunslinger’ type trousers or just a good pair of jeans. Or HBT Faro Britches and Waistcoat with an old leather jacket or MF® cotton Sack Coat
But enough shameless self promo, you know what works for you better than I do 😉

Designed in California by Mister Freedom® and crafted by Sugar Cane Co in Japan for MFSC. Limited edition.

SPECS:

PATTERN: An original MFSC pattern, inspired by 1930’s-1940’s work type trousers and cotton gentleman slacks, borrowing from both the American West and the Old World. Mid/high rise.

FABRIC:
“Gun Powder” black (between field grey and dark laurel green), wide HBT (herringbone twill), selvedge, 20% Cotton/80% Linen blend, 15 Oz. Woven in Japan.
Pocketing and waist Lining: HBT cotton (ochre color), an original MFSC fabric, woven in Japan (same fabric we used for the lining of the Faro Waistcoat)

DETAILS:
* Selvedge outer leg seam.
* Slash type front pockets, with inner selvedge angled stitched fold.
* Gun metal color donut button fly with double button waist.
* Two slash rear pockets, with arrowhead type button flaps.

PACKAGING: For the USA, the Faro Britches comes in an old school cardboard box with original MF® artwork. This sturdy box is not the collapsible cheapo kind, and can be used for storage of small items. Please re-use.

SHRINKAGE/SIZING:
About 2-5% shrinkage on this fabric. If you are usually a 32 waist, get a tagged 32.
We recommend an original cold soak and line dry. Subsequent cleaning should be done with the trousers flipped inside/out (to avoid marbling), gentle cycle, cold water, with minimal environmentally friendly detergent and line dry.
NOTE:  Full washing cycle in warm water and machine dry WILL result in more shrinkage (around 5%) and color loss. NOT recommended.

See chart below for raw and post cold soak/line dry approx. measurements:

Mister Freedom® MFSC spring 2012 (Part 5): “Britches Chaparral”

MFSC Britches Chaparral Waist2

Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane MFSC Spring 2012 “Men of the Frontier“: Britches Chaparral, Brown and Indigo Cotton/linen canvas.

Movin’ on, friends…

Here is our fifth installment of our “Men of the Frontier” journey, the cotton-linen canvas  “BRITCHES CHAPARRAL”.
Again, borrowing from both the American West and the Old World, we have combined European influenced fabrics with 30’s-40’s slacks and “chino” American style trousers.
The fabric options are the same than our “Chaparral Blouse”: two Cotton-Linen plain weave selvedge canvases, Indigo dyed and “cachou” brown.

A quite ‘simple’ trousers pattern for those britches, but loaded with small details, and made with fabrics that will wear very nicely and develop interesting character and patina.

SPECS:

PATTERN: An original MFSC pattern, inspired by 1930’s-1940’s work type trousers and cotton slacks. Mid/high rise.
FABRIC: The Chaparral Britches come in two very different fabric options (not two colors of the same fabric.)
Exclusively milled for us in Japan, in limited batches, both options are inspired by rare turn of the century French workwear textiles from our archives.
a) MFSC Brown Canvas: A blend of 80% linen and 20% cotton selvedge canvas, 12.5 Oz., in a “cachou“/ brown Duck color.
b) MFSC Indigo Canvas: A blend of 60% linen and 40% cotton selvedge canvas, 8 Oz., Indigo dyed.
DETAILS:
* Selvedge outer leg seam.
* Slash type front pockets, with inner selvedge angled stitched fold.
* Gun metal color donut button fly with double button waist.
* Two slash rear pockets, with arrowhead type button flaps.
* Watch/coin pocket
* Trousers type pocket bag construction and lining, with 100% cotton tight weave sateen fabric, beige color.
* 100% cotton tonal stitching
* Flat felled seam seat construction.
PACKAGING: For the USA, the BRITCHES CHAPARRAL come in an old school cardboard box with original MF® artwork. This sturdy box is not the collapsible cheapo kind, and can be used for storage of small items. Please re-use.
SHRINKAGE/SIZING:
The britches come UNWASHED, the material is raw, so shrinkage is expected. With an initial cold soak and line dry, both fabrics will shrink differently, but will reach TAGGED size down the line. Note that cotton-linen textiles shrink and stretch yoyo style with wear and wash.
An additional 1.5 inch can be let out from the bottom cuff if needed (single stitch machine.)
Note on fit: You’ll notice a different fit and silhouette with the two options on the photos. I am around a waist 31 usually, and had to go with a tagged waist 32 with both the Indigo and Brown britches. My brown pair has been cold washed (inside out to avoid marbling), line dried. I also tapered the leg by taking in the outer leg seam by about 1.5cm. My Indigo pair was just cold rinsed, line dried, no alteration, and still has some shrinkage due. Because I do not want to mess with the rich and deep Indigo color, I’ll wear them this way for a while. I don’t mind a bit looser fit for the summer with those. Rolled up with espadrilles should do the trick for our California weather…

See chart below for approximate measurements of raw vs. cold soaked/line dried. (we didn’t ‘pull’ on the fabric for measurements, and because the Indigo cotton/linen wrinkles more, there are slight differences). Due to very limited stock we couldn’t rinse/test all sizes/options.

MFSC Britches Chaparral sizing Chart

DISCLAIMER: Because of the nature of the indigo dye, bleeding is expected with the INDIGO canvas option BRITCHES CHAPARRAL. You WILL get some color rubbing if you wear a light color shirt tucked in. The bleeding stops overtime after normal wear/wash. Please use minimal mild AND environment friendly detergent.
