Mister Freedom® “COWBOY” Jacket, Selvedge Piqué Edition.
SS2019 Sportsman Catalog.
Made in USA.
Piqué (pee-kay), a “woven fabric with cords (wales) running warpwise”, is sometimes referred to as Bedford Cord.
Piqué jeans with matching jackets became popular with young adults in the early 1960’s, as a casual alternative to blue denim, with Levi’s® leading the trend with its 911 series released in a palette of subtle colors.
“Color jeans”, of assorted woven patterns and from several makers, made their way to American campuses, city streets and film sets. Lee Riders® was popular for its sateen “Westerner” models, Levi’s® for its pique and twills, and Wrangler® for its twill and light blue denim versions. Style icons like Steve McQueen or Paul Newman adopted their own favorites on and off screen, unwillingly promoting the style, contributing to its cool easygoing sixties fashion vibe today.
Our 100% cotton 12.05 Oz. piqué fabric features fine raised vertical cords on the face, with a contrasting waffle-like texture on the reverse. We are releasing it in two distinct color options: natural ‘wheat’ and a specific shade of ’vintage’ sage green. On close inspection, the wheat version features attractive minuscule brown flakes, as the yarn is unbleached.
The Mister Freedom® “Cowboy” jacket pattern is our twist on the classic 1960’s trucker-style jacket, and was initially introduced to our Sportsman Catalog sometime in 2015. The “Cowboy” is available in a traditional dark indigo NOS Cone mills 12.5 Oz denim twill, a beautiful lighter indigo “Malibu Sea” 14 Oz. selvedge denim milled in Japan, a NOS wheat color Cone Mills 12.5 Oz selvedge denim, a black-coated denim, and a special “Rodeo” edition.
The mfsc COWBOY Jacket Piqué Edition is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in the USA in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.
SPECS:
FABRIC:
100% cotton 12.05 Oz. piqué fabric, selvedge, milled in Japan.
Two color options:
a) Sage green
b) Wheat (unbleached natural color)
DETAILS:
* Fairly trim silhouette, sixties vibe.
* Original MF® slanted flap chest pockets.
* Original MF® cast brass tack buttons.
* MF® tonal “M” stitching on pockets.
* Fabric selvedge displayed on front panel fold.
* NOS woven stripe fabric accents on pocket flap facing.
* Buttoned cinch-waist side tabs.
* Copper rivet reinforcements backed by leather washers for pockets and sleeve placket.
* Double MF® labeling: Early workwear style printed cloth “Buckaroo” mfsc neck label and woven original “Yucatán” inner waistband label.
* 100% coton tonal stitching, with red chainstitch accent on the inside.
* Made in USA.
SIZING/FIT:
The Piqué Cowboy Jacket comes UN-WASHED (i.e. raw/loomstate) and is cut so that the measurements match the labeling after an initial cold soak/line dry.
Please note that some light color bleeding might be expected from the light brown leather washers after the initial soak, resulting in some faint color transfer visible on the wheat version. This will subside with subsequent wash cycles.
We recommend our usual method for raw cotton garments:
* 30-40mn cold soak with intermittent hand agitation, in washing machine or bath tub.
* Spin dry cycle (if using a machine).
* Hang dry.
As I did with all previous versions of the MF® Cowboy Jacket, I opted to size down to a Small (36) in this SS2019 Piqué edition. I am usually in between sizes (36 and 38) and went for the slimmer/shorter silhouette for this jacket. Note that unlike most denim fabrics, this piqué fabric will not stretch with wear.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements. Soaked = 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry.
MF® Cowboy Jacket Pique, Size 36 (rinsed/line dry)
CARE:
Wash when necessary.
Machine wash with cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.
NOTE: Some light color bleeding might be expected from the light brown leather washers after the initial soak or first washes, resulting in some color transfer visible on the wheat version. This will subside with subsequent wash cycles. Do not use bleach, as this will ruin your jacket, nor use hot water, as that might fix the color transfer permanently.
Available RAW/unwashed.
Sage green or Wheat.

Mister Freedom® 2019
Mister Freedom® Cowboy Jacket, “Okinawa 301” denim, “RODEO” Limited Edition & solid.
FW2018 Sportsman catalog.
Made in USA.
As one might have gathered from the MF® Fall-Winter 2018 lookbook, we decided to play around with ‘branding’ this season, taking pointers from old school chainstitch embroidery jobs we’ve seen on vintage clothing through years of collecting. Inspired by classic collegiate award jackets, 1950’s rodeo events promo outfits, old custom-branded work uniforms, we are releasing several limited edition MF®-branded pieces this Fall.
We translated some of our favorite T-shirt graphics into rayon embroidery, picking a few traditional garment patterns as candidates for “walking billboards”, following Henry Ford’s good words of advice, “A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.”
An obvious choice was the MF® Cowboy Jacket, a classic “trucker” style denim jacket we introduced during Fall 2015. Several iterations have included a 12.5 Oz. dark indigo denim version, a 13 Oz. “Malibu” denim lagoon-blue rendition, a wheat denim Cone Mills issue, and the most recent black-coated denim SS2018 release.
Unless you have already decided to adorn the rear panel of your “Cowboy” jacket with vintage AC/DC patches, or opted for hand-stitched artwork customization (see our friend John B‘s impressive MF® Ranch Blouse), there hasn’t been any good reason yet to get photographed from behind… until this release. Forget elevator selfies, you’re gonna need a friend to capture this baby!
The Fall 2018 Cowboy jacket features the popular sugarcane fiber/cotton denim blend developed by the R&D lab at Sugar Cane Co (did you know they now have an official IG account!?), an old mfsc favorite known as “Okinawa 301”, this time milled in a whooping special weight of 16.25 Oz.! The “Okinawa” denim is notorious for its desirable patina potential, and has been featured many times in Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane mfsc collaborations throughout the past 12 years.
The jacket is available full-on Rodeo style for the bad hombre, or plain-back, without embroidery.
An alternative is to just go nuts and customize your own. See below leather appliqué prototype, a one-of-a-kind hippy job done in-house, while the boss was playing badminton. It features an original free-hand “creation”, a California desert scene with a flying UFO (or sombrero, according to your level of sun exposure), made from left-over veg-tan leather scraps from the MF® Campus jacket production. Have at it.
One-of-a-kind customized MF® “Cowboy” jacket, raw, rinsed, and tanned in the California sun. (Not for sale)

The mfsc COWBOY Jacket in “Okinawa 301” denim is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in the USA in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.
The limited-edition RODEO version is chainstitched in Japan, using Toyo Enterprise’s expert craftsmanship and experience with traditional Americana-style embroidery.
SPECS:
FABRIC:
“Okinawa 301” denim, a sturdy and hairy 16.25 Oz. left-hand twill indigo denim, white with green line selvedge ID. Milled in Japan on narrow shuttle looms, from a blend of 20% Okinawan recycled sugar cane fibers and 80% cotton. This fabric is exclusive to Toyo Enterprises.
DETAILS:
* Fairly trim silhouette, sixties vibe.
* Special RODEO version: all original MF® artwork on rear panel, 100% rayon thread traditional chainstitch embroidery.
* Original MF® slanted flap chest pockets.
* Original MF® cast ‘silver’ shank buttons.
* MF® yellow “M” stitching on pockets.
* Orange and yellow combination stitching.
* NOS woven plaid fabric accents on pocket flap facing.
* Buttoned cinch-waist side tabs.
* Copper rivet reinforcements backed by leather washers for pockets and sleeve placket.
* Natural veg-tan debossed leather MF® original patch.
* All cotton thread chainstitch construction.
* Made in USA, embroidered in Japan.
SIZING/FIT:
The “Okinawa 301” Cowboy Jacket comes UN-WASHED (i.e. raw/loomstate) and is cut so that the measurements match the labeling after an initial cold soak/line dry.
We recommend our usual method for raw indigo denim garments:
* 30-40mn cold soak with intermittent hand agitation, in washing machine or bath tub.
* Spin dry cycle (if using a machine).
* Hang dry.
* As an optional step, wear the garment briefly while still damp, in order to shape it to your body and set your own creases. Hang and let fully dry (try to shape the jacket on the hanger to look as if you are still wearing it.)
Following this routine, the garment will be quite stiff when dry, due to the re-activated starch contained in the denim fibers. This is perfectly normal and expected for fabrics not processed with unnecessary softeners at the milling stage. This temporary stiffness will rapidly subside with normal wear.
As I did with all previous versions of the MF® Cowboy Jacket, I opted to size down to a Small (36) in this “Okinawa 301” edition. I am usually in between sizes (36 and 38) and went for the slimmer/shorter silhouette for this jacket. As with all denim twills, but even more so with this particular ‘Okinawa’ sugarcane fiber denim, shrinkage and stretching will occur for a while and will depend on the wearer’s body, activities and initial fit.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements. Soaked = 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry.
(Please note that the debossed graphic on the veg-tan MF® leather patch will naturally ‘flatten out’ when soaked in water.)
CARE:
Wash when necessary.
We recommend turning the jacket inside out to avoid marbling on the indigo side.
Hand washing can be a good option for those concerned with specific wear patterns and high-contrast color fades. Otherwise, machine wash inside out with cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.
Patina will develop according to activities and frequency of wear. For a natural patina and attractive indigo contrasts, refrain from over-washing your denim jacket. Just enjoy the journey and your ethically-made garment will age gracefully!
Available RAW/unwashed, plain-back or “Rodeo” limited edition.

Mister Freedom® 2018
Mister Freedom® COWBOY Jacket, New Old Stock black-coated crosshatch denim (BCD).
Sportsman mfsc Spring 2018.
Made in USA.
The latest release for the Spring 2018 Mister Freedom® Sportsman catalog is a new iteration of the popular MF® Cowboy Jacket, our twist on the classic trucker-style jacket. The MF® Cowboy Jacket is already available in a traditional dark indigo NOS Cone mills 12.5 Oz denim twill, a beautiful lighter indigo “Malibu Sea” 14 Oz. selvedge denim milled in Japan, and a NOS wheat color Cone Mills 12.5 Oz selvedge denim.
This time around, we wanted a dancing partner for the MF® SPEEDWAYS Jeans issued for Fall 2017 in a special “coated denim”. This special NOS fabric is not the modern waxy black rubber type coating seen on novelty contemporary jeans, but rather an interesting indigo denim twill printed with a soft-hand opaque coat of matte black water-based ink. If the black ink completely covers the indigo blue warp of the denim, the usual light-colored grayish weft (with somewhat of a greenish sheen) shows on the reverse of the fabric. The slub of the yarns is visible on the weft threads, giving this specific denim its crosshatch quality.
If the Cowboy Jacket in BCD initially looks flat black due to the pigment coating, it will develop its own patina overtime, blending shades of indigo with black and white, according to activities, frequency of wear and wash cycles. Undertones of indigo will rapidly appear with normal wear abrasion. See the denim wash test photos below, also featuring a small section rubbed with sand paper.
We opted for tonal stitching and un-branded oxidized black wreath donut buttons, for a rather unassuming vibe and neutral fashion statement.
The mfsc COWBOY Jacket in Black-Coated Denim is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in the USA in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.
SPECS:
FABRIC:
New Old Stock crosshatch pigment-coated denim, soft-hand matte black finish on indigo warp, 100% cotton, 12 Oz. Probable Kurabo (Japan) origin.
DETAILS:
* Fairly trim silhouette, sixties vibe.
* Original MF® slanted flap chest pockets.
* Oxydized black wreath donut shank buttons.
* MF® tonal “M” stitching on pockets.
* Charcoal “salt & pepper” chambray fabric accents on pocket flap facing.
* Buttoned cinch-waist side tabs.
* Copper rivet for pockets and sleeve placket reinforcements.
* Debossed leather MF® original patch.
* All cotton thread chainstitch construction, tonal with contrasting red accents on the inside.
* Made in USA.
SIZING/FIT
The Cowboy Jacket in BCD (Black-Coated Denim) comes UN-WASHED and is cut so that the measurements match the labeling AFTER an initial cold soak/line dry. This specific denim is pretty much sanforized, and very minimal shrinkage is to be expected.
We suggest you follow the usual initial method we recommend for raw denim garments:
* 30-40mn cold soak with intermittent hand agitation, in minimally-filled washing machine or bath tub.
* Spin dry cycle (if using a machine).
* Hang dry.
* As an optional step, wear the garment briefly when still not fully dry, in order to slightly shape it to your body and set creases. Hang and let fully dry.
The denim garment will stiffen when dry following this initial routine, due to the re-activated fabric starch contained in the cotton yarns. This is normal and the ‘crispiness’ will subside with normal wear.
As with all the versions of the MF® COWBOY Jacket, I opted to size down from the Medium (38) I usually wear in msfc garments, and went for a snug 36 (once cold soaked/line dry.)
What works is subjective and will depend on what silhouette you are comfortable and familiar with, on your body type and personal style.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements. Soaked = 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry.
CARE:
Treat the MF® COWBOY Jacket BCD as you would fancy indigo denim wearables. Hand washing can be a good option for those concerned with specific wear patterns and high-contrast colors fades, otherwise machine wash on delicate. Wash separately to avoid color transfer. Turn garment inside-out to minimize unsightly marbling of the fabric. Cold water, mild eco-friendly detergent. Hang dry.
Initially black, your Cowboy Jacket BCD will develop its own attractive patina with normal wear, blending shades of indigo, black, and white, according to activities, frequency of wear and wash cycles.

Mister Freedom® 2018
“Here Comes Loiron”
Cowboy Jacket, Malibu Sea Denim Edition
Sportsman Spring 2016
Made in USA
For Spring 2016 the first addition to the Mister Freedom® SPORTSMAN catalog, our blob-like growing collection of ‘classics’ with an Army-Navy Surplus store vibe, is a new edition of the MF® Cowboy Jacket. We are using the precious final yardage of Malibu Sea denim we had in stock to make a limited run of that jacket, previously released in both blue and wheat NOS Cone denim in 2015.
This “Malibu” denim is a 13 Oz. indigo-dyed denim twill milled in Japan, and features, brace yourselves, a solid white selvedge. More importantly, it stands out from the ocean of blue denim twills by its ridiculously handsome shade of blue, quite convenient to tone down the daily tuxedo.
“Gotta problem with my tux, pal?”
Here is a bit about that color, discussed as we introduced our Malibu Jeans in 2015:
“… For a touch of color, “Flipper” (1963) came to the rescue. We developed an indigo-dyed selvedge denim to match the washed-out indigo blue shade ever present in the old sea-faring Metrocolor movies and TV shows. During those ‘happy days’, denim distressing was often a DIY thing. Actors in character routinely wore their own personal (naturally-aged) jeans on set.Legend has it that Brando wore his own (studio-altered) Levi’s in “The Wild One” (1953).
For an extra salty seafarer look, the studios Wardrobe Depts distressed blue jeans with the help of bleach and pumice stone. Washed out blues blended better with beach scenery…
We wanted a similar effect without the bleach/distressed part, an indigo ‘Eastman Kodak’ blue, if you will. So we simply opted to start with a lighter shade of indigo for the warp yarn. Believe it or not, this proved much trickier and challenging for the Japanese mill than producing a dark indigo denim. So, there it is. Light blue indigo.”

The general pattern of the Mister Freedom® Cowboy Jacket is our take on the traditional trucker-type denim jacket, aka third-type jacket everyone is familiar with. We just tweaked a few cosmetic details such as front yoke and pocket shapes. The MF® Cowboy Jacket differs from our MF® Ranch Blouse series by its somewhat 60’s-70’s vibe, going “Here Comes Bronson” rather than “Grapes of Wrath”, more Hollywood margaritas than Dust Bowl moonshine.
The MF® Cowboy Jacket is designed and manufactured in California by Mister Freedom®, in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.
