Mister Freedom® NIXON Shirt, Selvedge Chambray, mfsc “Surplus” SS 2018, made in Japan.

Mister Freedom® NIXON Shirt, selvedge color chambray.
Surplus” catalog mfsc Spring 2018.
Made in Japan.

These shirts are the latest additions to our MF® “SURPLUS” Spring 2018 line-up, an on-going concept consisting of timeless classics given a twist à-la MF®, all expertly manufactured in Japan by our long-time friends and partners at Toyo Enterprises. The MF® “SURPLUS” collection is the made-in-Japan ethically-crafted companion of our popular made-in-USA “Sportsman” catalog.

The pattern of our ‘Nixon’ shirt is largely inspired by an original 1950’s vintage “Roomy Richard” chambray work shirt, a now-defunct American workwear label established in the late 1920’s. The main appeal of that vintage piece was for us the clever double-layer ‘cigarette’ chest pocket with flap pattern, somewhat reminiscent of the famous Big Yank® pocket, familiar to all vintage clothing aficionados. Originally devised to keep the worker’s cigarette pack dry, that practical little pocket can be used today as double storage for an iPhone and a public transportation ticket/smart card, etc…

Original 1940’s vintage “Roomy Richard” work shirt packaging.

Beside this tricky little feature (the design credit of which all goes to our friend Roomy Dick), the Mister Freedom® Nixon shirt boasts a 1930’s-style chin-strap, hi-count triple stitch construction and selvedge side gussets, all classic attributes of old-school vintage work shirts such as Big Mac®, Big Dick®, Big Yank®, etc…
Following the original red and navy blue printed corduroy release of our Nixon Shirt during Fall 2017, this season introduces a classic palette of selvedge color chambrays, milled in Japan. The three available options of this handsome light-weight crispy and slubby fabric are blue, red and black.
To subtly set each option apart, we played around with the stitching colors, opting for tonal or contrast, and with the shade of color of the corozo buttons.

The Nixon Shirt is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in Japan by Sugar Cane Co.

SIZING/FIT:
All three versions of the Mister Freedom® Nixon Shirt Chambray come raw/unwashed and will all shrink to tagged size. We recommend an initial cold rinse/line dry. Further shrinkage can be achieved with full wash/machine dry, but we recommend a cold soak first since a shrunken chambray fabric will stretch back as much as an egg will un-break.
The MF® Nixon Chambrays are true-to-size. I wear a Medium, my usual size in mfsc shirting. After full wash/machine dry, the fit is quite trim, with a tapered waist for a slim silhouette.
Refer to sizing chart for approximate measurements, post cold soak/line dry. Again, further shrinkage can be expected with full wash/machine dry, and all three fabrics will reach similar measurements after full wash. Our chart reflects cold soak (not full wash) and line dry. The fit pic reflects a full (cold) wash and line dry.

CARE:
The Nixon Chambray shirts are low-maintenance. Launder when needed. Machine-wash on delicate cycle, cold water, minimal eco-friendly detergent, line dry or machine dry.

Mister Freedom® NIXON Shirt, Printed Corduroy, mfsc “Surplus” FW 2017, made in Japan.

Mister Freedom® NIXON Shirt, printed corduroy.
“Surplus” catalog mfsc FW 2017.
Made in Japan.

This is the fourth addition to our MF® “SURPLUS” Fall 2017 line-up, an on-going concept consisting of timeless classics given a twist à-la MF®, expertly manufactured in Japan by our long-time friends and partners at Toyo Enterprises. The MF® “SURPLUS” collection is the ethically-made-overseas companion of our popular all-made-in-USA “Sportsman” catalog.

For the office anecdote-inclined, we used to refer to this pattern as the ‘Dick Shirt’ during R&D, but eventually settled on ‘Nixon’ for the official release, for obvious reasons.

The pattern of our ‘Nixon’ shirt is largely inspired by an original 1950’s vintage “Roomy Richard” chambray work shirt, a now-defunct American workwear label established in the late 1920’s. The main appeal of that vintage piece was for us the tricky double-layer ‘cigarette’ chest pocket pattern, somewhat reminiscent of the famous Big Yank pocket, familiar to all vintage clothing aficionados. That  pocket was designed to keep the worker’s cigarette pack dry.

Original 1940’s vintage “Roomy Richard” work shirt packaging.

If most of us today know better than to donate towards the cause of tobacco companies by purchasing their wares, the practical little pocket can still be used as double storage for, say, both an iPhone and a public transportation ticket/smart card.
Beside this fancy characteristic, our Nixon shirt features a chin-strap, triple stitch construction and side gussets, all classic attributes of old-school vintage work shirts.

The fabric we opted for is a 16 wale all-cotton corduroy, discharge-printed with a traditional plaid pattern typical of 1940’s-1950’s vintage outdoor gear, mimicking the appearance of woven checks. Because of the limited bleed-through printing, the reverse of the fabric displays the solid color of the base fabric, not unlike our Sportsman printed Camp Flannel Shirt from 2013. This printed corduroy was exclusively milled for mfsc in Japan, and is released for Fall 2017 in two color options, red plaid and blue plaid.

The Nixon Shirt is designed in California by Mister Freedom® and manufactured in Japan by Sugar Cane Co.

Introducing MF® “SURPLUS”, mfsc FW2017, made in Japan.

Upcoming MF® SURPLUS line-up, mfsc FW2017.

Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane Co “MF® SURPLUS”
mfsc Fall 2017
Made in Japan

If you have been following our Mister Freedom® mad scientist fashion journey for some time, you are familiar with mfsc (=Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane Co) capsule collections, most of them spreading over two seasons (Fall/Winter & Spring/Summer). Those collections are freely inspired by historical and cultural events, with garments designed with fictitious-yet-plausible characters in mind. We have tapped into a few eclectic topics so far, the Vietnam War, the Old American West, the world of 1970’s sailing, 1900’s French gangsters, the Mexican Revolution, motorcycle riding, Gypsy Jazz…. Never a dull moment.

During Spring 2013, we thought of adding a new concept called “The Sportsman”, an on-going non-trend-based catalog of made-in-USA goods, offering a Mister Freedom® take on time-tested classics. Style influences and references for “The Sportsman” were to be drawn from the same mixed-bag of old photos, vintage silhouettes, Sunny California, 1940’s-70’s movies, souvenirs, record covers, dusty Army-Navy stores, and the magical vault of vintage clothing that has always inspired us.

For Fall 2017, we are introducing “MF® SURPLUS”, the made-in-Japan companion to “The Sportsman”. Same concept, no replicas, just a twist à-la MF® on somewhat random timeless garments, with production made in Japan. We will also revisit some old beloved pieces from previous mfsc collections, giving them a new treatment without reshaping the wheel. Our “Surplus” line-up will maximize on the expertise and excellence of Toyo Enterprises’ homeland-manufacturing, allowing for intricate garment construction and challenging cut/sew operations.

Here is a preview of what’s been cooked-up for Fall 2017, and on its imminent way from Japan. Actually, thanks to rocket ship technology, the limited edition Apollo ’69 Sukajan has already landed at MF® HQ!

The full MF® SURPLUS line-up will soon be available from www.misterfreedom.com, our Los Angeles brick & mortar store, and fine retailers around the World.
