We are releasing this season’s Sportsman Chinos as a matching companion to the slate grey Continental Sportcoat and Continental Vest. The fabric is the exact same fancy blend of 60% cotton and 40% linen 8 Oz. denim twill, same NOS batch.
A Continental three-piece suit in slate grey can now be put together from our mfsc Sportsman Catalog of vintage-inspired made-in-USA menswear!
The NOS pocketing/facing may differ slightly for each of those three pieces, but consider this as a stylistic nod to eclectic miss-match linings of period tailor-made garments, when fabric availability was limited and all yardage was considered precious. We like this no-waste approach.
Please note that the slight color variation of the slate grey jacket/pants set in the photos above reflect the fact that my Sportcoat is from 2016 and was washed a few times, and the 2021 Chinos have merely been rinsed. This light-colored denim fabric actually has very nice patina potential.
Our Sportsman Chinos and Continental Trousers feature similar design details, but differ fit-wise. While the top block is comparable on both models, the Sportsman Chinos are cut with a more generous 40s/50s-style leg, and the Continental Trousers have a slimmer leg profile. The choice is a matter of one’s personal style preferences and body type.

SIZING/FIT:
The SPORTSMAN CHINOS are sold RAW (unwashed) and will shrink to tagged size following the usual protocol:
• Cold soak for about 30-40mn with occasional hand agitation.
• Washing machine spin dry.
• Line dry. (No heat dryer)
These trousers are true-to-size, with a ‘forgiving’ waist (aka vanity size), adjustable via the rear cinch. Go for your usual size in mfsc pants, but consider that the full leg and higher rise will provide an old school vintage work pants silhouette.
I opted for a W30 in these (at 5.7’’ / approx. 150 lbs, I navigate between W30 and W32 in mfsc pants/jeans), as I wanted more of a 60s Continental Trousers silhouette than a 40s/50s workwear chinos fit.
With a generous inseam, the overlocked leg opening is left open to your cuffing preference. I opted for a simple 1.25 inch hem, DIY with a regular single needle machine.
CARE:
When needed, machine wash on DELICATE, pants inside-out, cold water with minimal environmentally-friendly detergent and line dry.
Do not use the washer’s heavy-duty cycle, as you wouldn’t with any piece of menswear suiting.
Heat dryer is also not recommended and may result in excessive and irreversible shrinkage.

Our popular mfsc “Sportsman Chinos” are back this Fall, marking the final installment of the Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane production of this glorious year 2019.
The “Sportsman Chinos” are classic workwear-style trousers with a 1940’s-50’s period vibe. This pattern was initially introduced in NOS denim sometime in 2012 as the Frontier Chinos (“Men of the Frontier” collection), and we later released various models in Beach Chino Twill, Indigo cotton-linen Métisse, OD Mil-Specs Cotton Sateen, and Khaki HBT.
Unlike the slender 1960’s silhouette of the Continental Trousers series, the cut of the Sportsman Chinos features a fuller leg, higher rise and generous top block. The resulting old school fit is reminiscent of vintage classic cotton chino twill work pants.
Our fabric of choice for this 2019 “Frontier” Chinos release is an attractive New Old Stock 2×1 dark indigo denim twill, milled in Japan by the famed Kurabo company. The lightweight yet sturdy 10.5 Oz. denim features a crispy hand with somewhat of a waxy rigid finish. This fabric recalls vintage US Army barrack bags, or early Lee® “Jelt-Denim” overalls and chore coats.
For pocketing, we opted for a fancy NOS woven striped cotton twill, to contrast with the utilitarian dark denim and stark tonal stitching.

NOTE: Above photos show a hemmed pair, with a simple traditional 1¼ inch fold. Production comes un-hemmed, with an open/overlocked bottom, for your personal cuffing preference, with or without a fold. Hemming can be done with a common single-needle sewing machine (no chainstitch machine required), a service easily provided by your local alteration place.

The Sportsman “Frontier” Chinos are sold RAW (unwashed) and will shrink to tagged size.
We recommend this usual protocol before wearing or cropping/hemming:
- Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
- Spin dry and line dry.
- Hang until fully dry.
This specific 2×1 denim is sanforized, with hardly any shrinkage resulting from a cold soak. I opted for a Waist 32, my usual size with mfsc trousers (when W31 is unavailable.) These are cut generously in the waist, with a roomy top block and high rise. I could fit a W30 but personally preferred the fuller leg of the W32 for this particular workwear trousers style.
Production comes un-hemmed, with an open/overlocked bottom (about 40” inseam), for your personal cuffing preference, with or without a fold. Hemming can be done with a common single-needle sewing machine (no chainstitch machine required), a service easily provided by your local alteration place.
The size that will work best for you depends on how you like your pants to fit. We recommend referring to our rinsed measurements from the chart below, and comparing them with the measurements of similar trousers you own. This is how we measure our garments.
CARE:
Launder when needed.
We recommend turning indigo blue/denim garments inside out to avoid marbling during laundering. Machine wash, cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.
Potential attractive patina will develop according to activities and frequency of wear.

We pulled out the pattern of our original 2013 Sportsman Chinos from the vaults, previously issued in Beach Chino Twill, Indigo cotton-linen Métisse, OD Mil-Specs Cotton Sateen, …, to release a Spring 2017 version in a handsome recently-acquired New Old Stock khaki twill with a fine herringbone weave.
Unlike the slender 1960’s silhouette of the Mister Freedom® Continental Trousers series, the Sportsman Chinos pattern features a fuller leg, reminiscent of vintage 1940’s-50’s cotton twill work pants.
For the pocket bags, we opted for a fancy NOS woven striped cotton twill, of EU origin.
NOTE: Above photos show a hemmed pair, with a simple traditional 1½ inch fold. Production comes un-hemmed, with an open/overlocked bottom, for your personal cuffing preference.

We recommend an initial cold wash, delicate cycle, and line dry. These trousers are true-to-size, with a ‘forgiving’ waist, adjustable via the rear cinch. Go for your usual size in mfsc garments, but consider that the full leg and higher rise will provide an old school vintage work pants silhouette. These will not work for the tight pants contemporary fashionista.
With a generous inseam, the overlocked leg opening is left open to your cuffing preference. I opted for a 1½ inch fold, regular single needle machine stitch, flood length.

CARE:
These cotton twill pants are low-maintenance. Machine wash when needed, cold/warm water, delicate cycle, eco-friendly detergent. Hang dry or tumble dry.
