MF® “7161″ Utility Trousers Type III, SC301 Okinawa x SC401 Hawaii Fiber Denim Combo.
mfsc FW2025 “Finding Mister Freedom®”
Made in Japan
Straight out of Weirdsville in the early days of “Heritage Fashion” — when that thing was yet a thing —, these are the funky dungarees that started the wild ride for Mister Freedom® back in 2005~2007, the fruit of our initial collaboration with Sugar Cane Co. The “7161” Utility Trousers (aka “Frankenjeans”) had everyone at the time in the five-pocket market like… “whoaa… why?”
The “7161” was the turning point for our small Mister Freedom® brand/store, an “organic” evolution from a local vintage clothing provider to a vintage-inspired, international, independent menswear label, still kicking twenty years later.
The original design released in 2007 used to be documented on this blog, but the blogpost has since disappeared, and archives files lost, due to numerous computer hard drive crashes, and some hacking, through the years.
The original pitch for those jeans at the time — aka the story behind an original garment design that justified venturing into the world of fashion for me — consisted of a fictitious blue collar character in the 1930s who owned a sewing machine. He needed to stitch-up a new pair of work dungarees overnight for his next shift, from scratch, and used whatever fabric scraps and trims he had lying around at home. This meant home-made vibe, single needle machine, no chainstitch, rudimentary skills, …, and a very creative approach to wing it! That tall tell would also be my excuse for having absolutely no idea how to make a pair of jeans, and no traditional sewing/pattern-making skills.
That story evolved into a full-fledged menswear collection the following year — SS2028 mfsc Naval Clothing Tailor —, as the character had become a Merchant Marine sailor cruising the Seven Seas, getting custom-made uniforms from local tailors around the naval bases.
Besides a chronological appearance in the Mister Freedom® Archives IG, below is a glimpse of what R&D documentation of the original Type I model survived:

First LA factory-produced sample of the Mister Freedom® “7161”, with edits notes and hand-cut stencil board, circa 2006

My original pair of well-worn “7161” Utility Trousers, with custom added-on back pockets, circa 2007

Another pair of “7161” Utility Trousers, with custom A-2 type cargo pocket add-on, circa 2007, sadly stolen since.
- The first hand-made “7161” prototype I came-up with, 2005
- The original 2006 pitch
Initially produced in USA, this 2025 limited release of the “7161” is crafted in Japan, following the same pattern, single-needle construction, same details and cut (but with a higher front rise), and same unusual mis-match selvedge denim twills combination. The randomly-mixed fabric panels consist of Japan-milled 14 oz. selvedge sugarcane fiber denims (SC301 “Okinawa” left-hand-twill and SC401 “Hawaii” right-hand-twill), and will contribute to a subtlety-contrasting natural patina over time, with normal wear.
The MF® “7161” Utility Trousers Type III is designed in California, USA, and produced in Japan in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.

SIZING/FIT:
The Mister Freedom® “7161” comes RAW/unwashed. The pattern is adjusted so that the measurements match the tagged size AFTER an initial cold soak/line dry. Expect about one inch shrinkage in the waist.
We recommend the usual protocol before wearing:
- Cold soak in a tub for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
- Line dry, no heat dryer.
Note: The resulting stiffness of the garment after it has fully dried is due to the starch present in the denim fabric yarns. The rigidity will subside with wear.
At 5.7’ ~145 lbs, I easily fit a W30, but opted for a comfortable W31 with a cinched back.
The tagged size that will work best for you depends on your body type and how you like your clothes to fit.
Please refer to our sizing chart and reach out to sales@misterfreedom.com for further sizing advice.
CARE:
When laundering is needed after repeat wear, turn jeans inside/out to prevent marbling of the fabric, hand wash or machine wash on DELICATE, cold water, mild eco-friendly detergent. Line dry.
Do not use the washer’s heavy-duty cycle. Hot water and heat dryer are also not recommended and may result in excessive and irreversible shrinkage.
Available from www.misterfreedom.com, our Los Angeles brick & mortar store, and fine retailers around the World.
