Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane mfsc FW2025 Line-Up Preview: “Finding Mister Freedom®” Classics

MF® x Sugar Cane Co FW2025 mfsc “Finding Mister Freedom” classics:

Do you have 18 minutes?

Sometime in 2024, documentary filmmakers Sarah Reyes and Daniel Driensky from Exploredinary reached out. They were considering doing a small feature on the Mister Freedom® brand, to document the road to its 20-year history, and the creative process of our designs.
I’m a cave dweller and not comfortable with filmed interviews, but watched their Art Is Love: Nepal one evening… It was inspiring, and I was humbled. I realized how lucky I was that our small clothing brand had fallen under the couple’s radar. If anyone knew how to tell a story, they sure did. They were artists, wouldn’t have a phony fashion industry angle, and were obviously real pros at mastering their creative medium (film). Didn’t hurt that they also sounded both like good humans. I dismissed my usual impostor syndrome, seized the opportunity, project was a go.

Sarah and Daniel showed up at 7161 Beverly Blvd one day of April 2024 with a small suitcase of pro gear. They did their thing for a few hours under Joe’s watchful eye and went back to home base, Dallas, Tx.
By Jan 2025, they had a rough cut, had called the project “Finding Mister Freedom”, and submitted it for review. I started watching it, apprehensively, assuming all they had was shot that day: one interview and some footage of MF® HQ. Well, 18 minutes later, the clever intro, the approach, the filming, brilliant editing, the research involved in putting the narrative together, the dive into past collections, use of archive footage and photos… I cried a little. That those two had spent that much time and efforts on actually finding Mister Freedom® was just too much. And I know a thing or two about rabbit holes.

Exploredinary’s “rough cut” is what you too can watch here, unaltered, just the way I saw it.
Now our Creative Director The Joe Greene can live for ever, on the tube.

Thank you Daniel and Sarah.

MF® “7161 Utility Trousers”, Type III, SC301 Okinawa x SC401 Hawaii  Fiber Denim Combo (Japan)

Straight out of Weirdsville in the early days of “Heritage Fashion”, these are the funky dungarees that started the wild ride for Mister Freedom® back in 2007, the fruit of our initial collaboration with Sugar Cane Co. The “7161” Utility Trousers (aka “Frankenjeans”) had everyone at the time in the five-pocket market like… “whoaa… why?”
Initially produced in USA, this 2025 limited release of the “7161” is made in Japan, following the same pattern, single-needle construction, details and cut (but with a higher rise), and same unusual mis-match selvedge denim twills combination. The randomly-mixed fabric panels consist of Japan-milled 14 oz. selvedge sugarcane fiber denims (SC301 “Okinawa” left-hand-twill and SC401 “Hawaii” right-hand-twill), and will contribute to a subtlety-contrasting natural patina over time, with normal wear.

MF® N-1H Modified, Indigo & Khaki Jungle Cloth (Japan)

A modified version of the original Mister Freedom® N-1H Deck Jacket (H was for hook) we introduced back in 2008, combining several USN N-1 Deck jacket types into one classic “might have been” design. This 2025 edition differs by featuring a mid-weight wide-wale corduroy lining, as we substituted the Mil-Specs bulky alpaca pile/wool blanket lining of vintage originals with a lighter fabric, for a more versatile all-season jacket.
Made in Japan.

MF® DIGGERS Trousers, Brown “Katsuragi” Drill & 13.5 oz. Selvedge Blue Denim (Japan)

An MF® twist on an uncommon (for us) piece of military gear, a pair of vintage 1952 Australian drill trousers. Characteristic of this utilitarian design are the snap button fly closure, high waist, pleated front, and wide leg pattern. The term “digger” is military slang for Aussie soldiers, an allege reference to trench digging in WW1.
Released in two premium fabric options: 11.5 oz. brown Katsuragi twill and 13 oz. 3×1 SC1937 selvedge denim, both milled in Japan.
Made in Japan.

MF® RANCH BLOUSE & CALIFORNIAN Lot64MD, 16 oz. selvedge “Midnight” denim (USA)

The classic Mister Freedom® Ranch Blouse and Californian Lot64MD combo, cut in a 16 oz. selvedge “Midnight” denim (hefty indigo warp x black weft) with amazing natural patina potential, with normal wear. This is, sadly, our final opportunity to acquire this fabric, as producing it in Japan for a profit is proving too challenging for the mill.
Made in USA.
