Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane Co FW2024 mfsc SUBMARINER Collection:

FW2024 mfsc SUBMARINER Story/Line-up:
This Fall, we are paying tribute to the “Silent Service”, diving into the undersea world of vintage international military submarines and their crews, 1930s~1950s.

Historical WW2 background:
Due to the extreme hardship of life undersea for submarine service enlisted men during wartime — 20% casualty rate (the highest of any US forces in WW2), outdated vessels, faulty torpedoes, vulnerability to both air raids and naval anti-sub depth charges, long patrols, sub crews 24/7 “can-do” attitude, long war patrols, scarcity of individual rewards/medals, close quarters and limited space, humidity, poor air quality, crewmen hygiene (1 brief shower every 10 days, no laundry), boat stench, boredom, social isolation, … — most Navy sub skippers tended to be lenient regarding regulations while their boat was underway.

Period photos, rare filmed footage and written accounts depict all kinds of outfits being worn by patrolling sub crews. Sleeveless USN chambray work shirts, cut-off dungarees, skivvies or shirtless, no covers, private-purchase clothes… with the added unusual look of bushy beards and wild non-reg hairdos after long patrols. Officers simply wore khakis.

Because of the known risks shared by all submarine crews, on both side of the WW2 conflict, the level of respect for the enemy was generally high between Navies.

A Sub patrol duties spanned from directly engaging a man-of-war, sinking supply ships, spying on convoys, tracking enemy activity, inserting invading land troops on remote beaches, extracting scouting parties, rescuing downed air pilots (aka “lifeguarding zoomies” in submariners jargon, 504 airmen rescued in WW2), etc… The levels of stealth vs. full open confrontation giving away a sub’s location obviously differed in all those missions.

Formality did not flourish aboard submarines where performance counted more than appearance.
David A. Jones “US Silent Service, Dolphins & Combat Insignia 1924-1945

During WW2, many US Navy subs were sent on “Search & Rescue” missions, with the task of picking up downed airmen or stranded surface ship crews lost at sea. Friends (allies) and foes (enemy forces) could then end-up on the same boat — literally —, heading back to Sub Base, or for the nearest POW camp. Collecting an eclectic mix of enemy uniforms as souvenirs was not uncommon. After a sub-to-sub battle at sea, a victorious US Navy sub crew may find itself underway homebound with U-Boat prisoners on board…
A famous photo series of the captured German U-Boat U-175 crew aboard the USCGC Spencer in 1943 shows another uniform swap practice, with some of the rescued Kriegsmariners warming up in a range of US Navy deck jackets.

Our mfsc fictitious story:
Mixing design elements and tailoring influences from several sub/surface Naval forces (a range of International Navies: US, British, French, Australian, German…), we are revisiting the approach of our original 2008 mfsc “Naval Clothing Tailor” story, and applying it to a fictional US Navy Submariner (pronounced subma-rEE-ner, and not sub-MAriner) during his deployments in the Pacific Fleet Submarines and Submarine Force Atlantic.
While at Sub Base or on leave in exotic locations, our fictitious “Bubblehead” (as surface sailors known as “Skimmers” affectionately nickname submariners) would get custom uniforms made, blending civilian and military styles, regulation and non-reg fabrics, and mixing American, Australian, European, or Axis naval uniform styles.

For FW2024, our “Bubblehead” seabag consists of:

1) FAIRWATER Duffle Coat (JP):
ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by traditional vintage British duffle coats, 1940s Royal Navy issued duffle coats, and original 1941 USN Submarine HBT wool jackets.
Fabric: Double-layer (double cloth) HBT wool, 30 Oz., charcoal color. With wear, the wide-weave herringbone pattern will gradually appear. Milled in Japan. Fabric inspired by ultra-rare original 1941 USN Navy Submarine coats.
Specs:
* Hip-length.
* Round collar with chinstrap.
* Fully unlined, all clean seams, twill backing tape.
* Wood toggles, twisted linen rope.
* Two concealed chest pockets.
Sizing:  CL wears sample Medium (may wear Small in prod.)
Note: The Fairwater (or “Conning Tower”, or “Sail”) of a submarine is the command room (or “brain center”), the small “tower” structure on top of the boat, mostly known to old war movie watchers as the place the periscope comes out of (“Up scope!!”), with the classic Hollywood scene of a tense radarman monitoring the green oscillating ping of enemy presence on a black screen, “watching the sound”!

2) TORPEDO Jacket (USA):
ETA: TBD
Pattern: Loosely inspired by WW2 U-Boat Kriegsmarine reefer-style leather jackets, and based on an American vintage 1930s-40s civilian sportswear leather jacket.
Shell: Veg-tan black tea-core cowhide. Same grade as MF® Campus “Stallion” and Ranch Blouse “Ringo”.
Body lining: NOS woven plaid cotton flannel (sleeve lining: NOS woven cotton dobby stripe)
Specs:
* High five-button front style.
* Notched lapel with “stand collar” option.
* Arcuate front yokes.
* Double hip flap pockets.
* 30s style split-back expansion gusset (action-back).
* Half-belt back.
* Corrozo wood buttons/keyhole button holes.
* Gusseted button cinch cuffs.
Sizing:  CL will potentially wear 38 (Medium), TBD.
Note: Charles A. Lockwood, iconic figure in WW2 US Navy submarine history, and adored by both his men and superiors, had his first command in 1919 on an ex-German sub U-97, in order to evaluate enemy U-Boats performances.)

3) BRIDGE Sweater (JP):
ETA: End Sept 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage 1960s USN Deck wool knit sweaters (No. DSA-1-6978-T-65)
We replaced the original navy blue wool knit with indigo cotton knit, extended cuff length and adjusted the fit.
Fabric: 100% cotton knit, indigo-dyed. Milled in Japan.
Specs:
* Traditional high neck naval style, ribbed knit.
* Slim fit, can be worn as layer under overshirt.
* Seamless ribbed waistband.
* Long early style foldable ribbed knit cuffs.
Sizing:  CL wears Small.
Note: The “Bridge” part of a submarine is the top of the Fairwater/Conning Tower, where the boat is controlled when on the surface.

4)  SKIPJACK Overshirt (JP):
ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage sportswear outdoor wool overshirts (Eddie Bauer, Woolrich, etc), revisited.
Fabric: fancy 50/50 cotton/wool narrow shuttle loom selvedge denim, 15.5 Oz. Warp = 100% cotton indigo yarn. Weft = 100% dark grey wool yarn. White with red line selvedge ID, with selvedge concealed inside cuffs. Milled in Japan.

ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage 1960s USN navy blue wool Trousers, Undress Blues, zipper fly, wrap leg. Classic 1930s-40s style wide leg silhouette.

Dear Friends,

Hope everyone is faring well under the circumstances, staying healthy, sane and positive. I won’t dwell on current events as your news sources are probably handling that daily, just hoping you are finding ways to navigate through these uncharted waters well, and safely.

We’ve kept on truckin’! Here are the fruits of our Mister Freedom® x Sugar Cane (mfsc) collaboration this Fall 2020. The line-up this season consists of the following groupings, produced in Japan and USA (regrouped in the above photos by “stories” rather than Country of Origin, with some style crossovers.)

TRUCKSTOP” is a new capsule, drawing inspiration from the colorful world of the American independent trucker, with Mid-West style influences spanning 1950s to 1970s. Think Smokey & The Bandits, Convoy, Citizens Band Radio (CB), vintage Overdrive magazines, River Rat and the 1973 US trucker strike

Mister Freedom® SWABBIES dungarees, 10 Oz. selvedge “Snow” denim edition, mfsc SS2020 “Waterfront Surplus”. Made in Japan.

Mister Freedom® SWABBIES dungarees, 10 Oz. “Snow” denim edition.
mfsc SS2020 “WATERFRONT SURPLUS”, SURPLUS catalog.
Made in Japan.

It’s been “All Hands on Deck” lately. For us at the MF® HQ, but more-importantly nation-wide, as anyone who has access to electricity and a few brain cells must have noticed, unlike this fine group of our Country’s learning elite…
So here are the SWABBIES, the final installment of our “WATERFRONT SURPLUS” nautical capsule collection.

The term swabbie is military lingo for a low-rank bluejacket, referring to the sailor’s chore of mopping (swabbing) the deck, barefoot in the old days. This derogatory expression is typical of the healthy rivalry in different branches of the United States Armed Forces. US Marines might call sailors swabbies. A sailor who’d rather be referred to as squid, might call an Infantryman jungle bunny, or a Marine crayon eater. Submariners are bubble heads… All in good humor. This insiders’ exchange quotes some other colorful examples.

The inspiration behind the Mister Freedom® SWABBIES came from a pair of rare 1940’s-50’s private-purchase naval dungarees from the “Portlite Uniform” maker. If these conformed to the general silhouette and specs of traditional US Navy-issued denim dungarees, they featured really fancy tailoring and intricate pattern work for a pair of work trousers, which we liked. The apparently-inconspicuous two front pockets are actually a very clever combination of two types of pocket patterns, slash and patch, a construction tour-de-force on a wrap leg that only make sense when studying the inside of the pants.
Fabric yield on that vintage specimen was definitely optimized by using the fabric selvedge on as many parts of the pants as possible, folded waist band, front pockets, watch pocket, and rear pockets. The rear pockets feature an horizontal warp, as the patch pockets of the denim Longshoreman do, a detail that will only start revealing itself with wear and patina.

The most striking feature of our SWABBIES however is the authentic navy bells. We didn’t spare fabric on this one, and went full-on 1940’s-style authentic bells. Unlike 1970’s hippy bell bottoms, traditional naval bells flare from the inseam, not outseam, as the trousers’ profile photo attests. This is due to the fact that traditional navy dungarees feature a wrap leg (one folded single piece of fabric per leg, no out seam), a pattern style we have often toyed with, from our 2007 7161 Utility Trousers to the more recent Topsiders multiple iterations.

The story behind the origin of naval flares seems to be lost to History, with many legends floating around. Bell bottom trousers might have been issued to US Navy sailors as early as 1813, with a denim model introduced in 1901. The wide leg opening allegedly allowed roll-ups above the knee, keeping the pants dry while swabbing, as regulations from Secretary of the Navy Crowninshield in 1817 suggest. (source)
The myth about tying up the legs and using the trousers as a life preserver for a man overboard is probably moonshine on the water.

We kept the fit of our SWABBIES authentic, and refused to compromise with modern fashion adjustments, ‘cause we craycray like that. These feature a high rise, fit top block, and flaring that starts at the knee, gradually reaching a whooping 11.5 inches at leg opening! Not everyone will pull that off, but we just love that unmistakable vintage naval silhouette so much that we had to add bells to the MF® catalog at some point. And since 2020 is nothing short of an unusual year so far, there it is.

The SWABBIES’ fabric, a dark and handsome 2×1 selvedge denim with a “snowy” neppy texture, matches that of the Dockyard and Longshoreman. For those into the total look, the set will soon be modeled for your viewing pleasure, as soon as things get a bit under control in the World. For less of a “Sand Pebbles” extra statement, pairing the SWABBIES with a solid Skivvy, a classic chambray shirt or pull-over Secoya might be the ticket. Vintage naval photos abound and could be a style inspiration for some. The fits are also a bit all over the place on period photos, as can be seen on the shots below from albums in our archives.

The fabric evo on the SWABBIES should be quite interesting with normal wear and occasional laundering, not unlike that of vintage US dungarees.

The mfsc SWABBIES are designed in California by Mister Freedom®, and manufactured in Japan by Sugar Cane Co., from denim fabric milled in Japan.

SPECS:
FABRIC:
10 Oz. dark indigo blue 2×1 denim, “snowy” neppy texture, white with yellow line selvedge ID. Milled in Japan.
DETAILS:
* An original mfsc pattern inspired by US Navy 1940’s-50’s private-purchase denim bell bottom trousers aka dungarees.
* Authentic traditional USN dungarees flared leg pattern, inseam bell shape with straight outseam.
* Wrap leg (no outseam.)
* Intricate use of the denim selvedge in construction (folded waist band, front pockets, watch pocket, and rear pockets.)
* Black 1940s-style laurel leaf starburst metal donut waist & fly buttons.
* Front pockets combining complex patch-type and slash-type pattern due to the challenge of the wrap leg. No open seams.
* Rear patch pockets cut using horizontal warp.
* Flat lock chainstitch construction.
* Black tonal all-cotton stitching.
* Bar-tacked stress points.
* Woven rayon mfsc “SURPLUS” label on inside waistband.
* Made in Japan.

SIZING:
The SWABBIES come UN-WASHED and are cut so that the measurements match the labeling AFTER an initial cold soak/line dry.
We recommend the usual protocol before wearing:

  • Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
  • Spin dry and line dry.
  • Wear briefly before fully-dry to set creases, then hang until fully dry.

I opted for a W32 in the Swabbies, for a fitted top block, comfortable thighs and period bell-bottoms. The waist might feel a bit tight after the cold soak, but with a bit of wear, the “snow” denim stretches back slightly to the tagged waist. After minimal wear, the fabric will naturally stretch at the stress points, like the waist, as opposed to, say, the ankles.
I opted for a no cuff silhouette, until swabbing duty. To facilitate sizing for wide range of frames, we cut limited odd sizes too (29, 31, 33).

Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements.
Soaked = 30-40mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry (ie. minimal shrinkage).

CARE:
Wash when necessary. We recommend turning garment inside-out to avoid potential marbling of the denim fabric.
Machine wash with cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.

Available RAW/unwashed.

Worn on/off for ~ 2 months.

Mister Freedom® Californian Lot.674 Blue Jeans, “301 Okinawa” 14 Oz. sugar cane fiber left-hand twill denim.
Spring 2017 mfsc Sportsman catalog.
Made in USA.

Introduced sometime during 2010, the Mister Freedom® Californian Blue Jeans is our interpretation of the classic five pocket denim jeans. In the past seven years, we have released several versions of the pattern and fit. Here is a brief recap:

* Californian Lot.54 (yellow paper flasher, 2010): The original issue, straight leg, classic 1950’s silhouette. Issued in 12.5 Oz. NOS Cone indigo denim.
* Californian Lot.44 (box package, 2011): Similar pattern, buckle back added, straight leg, classic 40’s-1950’s silhouette. Issued in about 37 types of NOS denim twills.
* Californian Lot.64 (red paper flasher, 2013): Straight leg, slightly tapered, classic 1960’s vibe. Originally issued in 13 3/4 Oz. indigo denim (SC1966).
* Californian Lot.64US (Army green paper flasher, 2014): “Uncle Sam” edition. Straight leg, slightly tapered, classic 1960’s vibe. Issued in 13 3/4 Oz. indigo denim (SC1966).
* Californian Lot.64OK (Orange paper flasher, 2014): “Okinawa Advisor” edition. Straight leg, slightly tapered, classic 1960’s vibe. Issued in 14 Oz. “Okinawa 301” indigo denim.
* Californian Lot.74 (Aqua green paper flasher, 2015): Tapered, our slimmest leg, classic “1960’s youth” vibe. Originally issued in 12.5 Oz. NOS Cone indigo denim, then in NOS 12.5 Oz. wheat denim
* Californian Lot.654 (yellow paper flasher, 2015): Pattern and fit of our classic Lot.64, with the bells and whistles of our original Lot.54. Issued in NOS 12 Oz. Cone indigo denim.
* Californian Lot.64E (red/white stripe paper flasher, 2016): Special “US Presidential Election” Edition. Straight leg, slightly tapered, classic 1960’s vibe. Issued in 16.5 Oz. NOS Cone indigo denim.

For Spring 2017, we are welcoming a new member to the Californian Blue Jeans family: the Lot.674.

Still refraining from releasing denim in an array of unnecessary washes and factory-distressed options, the Lot.674 comes in its original raw indigo loomstate. Its raison d’être, as part of the MF® Sportsman catalog, is in its classic mid 60’s slim silhouette. With no intent to reinvent the wheel, we combined the pattern of our popular button-fly Lot.64 with the slightly tapered leg of the zip-fly Lot.74. With even lesser of an intent to tap into the competitive market of sprayed-on men’s jeggings, we merely put a 60’s surf movie twist on our classic five-pocket Californian. The Lot 674 is our slimmest jeans silhouette, and is as slim as we’ll go.

Conan O’Brien, not wearing a Mister Freedom® Californian Lot.674.

For its introduction, the Lot.674 pattern gets royal treatment with a special “301 Okinawa” coronation!
An old mfsc favorite, this sturdy 14 Oz. left-hand twill selvedge denim fabric is a blend of 80% cotton and 20% recycled sugar cane fibers, a novel textile exclusive of Toyo Enterprise, originally developed some 25 years ago for their Sugar Cane Co workwear label. This is a new freshly-milled batch we have been waiting for for a while. The “301 Okinawa” is the same ‘hairy’ denim we used on the first project designed for our Sugar Cane Japanese friends and partners, namely the original mfsc 7161 Utility Trousers (2005). That denim was also used on the Vaquero Jeans (Viva la Revolución 2013), the Okinawa Patrol ShirtDenim Topsiders and Watchman Jacket (Sea Hunt 2014), the Lot.64 Californian “Okinawa” (Sportsman Fall 2014), …
With normal wear and wash cycles, the “301 Okinawa” develops quite an attractive and natural patina. Pictures above feature a mix of several raw/soaked once/slightly worn pairs of Lot.674.

The Californian LOT.674 blue jeans are designed and manufactured in California by Mister Freedom®, in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.

SIZING/FIT
The Californian LOT.674 blue jeans come UN-WASHED and are cut so that the measurements match the labeling AFTER an initial cold soak/line dry. A tagged W32 x L34 will shrink to approximately 32 inches x 34 inches after a soak/dry process.
We recommend the usual protocol before wearing: cold soak/spin dry/line dry/wear briefly when still damp to set creases/line dry until fully dry.

The size that will work for you depends on how you like your jeans to fit. I wear a slim leg yet comfortable tagged W32 in the Lot.674. The fit pix show a pair of W32, cold-soaked once, worn on/off for about 2 months, with some more shrinkage/stretching down the line.
We recommend getting your usual waist size, although proper fit is a subjective matter and everyone has their own idea of what looks good.
As with all denim twill, shrinkage and stretching will occur for a while and will depend on the wearer’s body, activities and initial fit.
Please refer to sizing chart for approximate raw/soaked measurements.

Soaked = 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry (ie. minimal shrinkage).

CARE:
Wash your jeans when needed. Machine wash inside out to avoid marbling. Cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.
Patina will develop according to activities and frequency of wear.
