FW2024 mfsc SUBMARINER Story/Line-up:
This Fall, we are paying tribute to the “Silent Service”, diving into the undersea world of vintage international military submarines and their crews, 1930s~1950s.
Historical WW2 background:
Due to the extreme hardship of life undersea for submarine service enlisted men during wartime — 20% casualty rate (the highest of any US forces in WW2), outdated vessels, faulty torpedoes, vulnerability to both air raids and naval anti-sub depth charges, long patrols, sub crews 24/7 “can-do” attitude, long war patrols, scarcity of individual rewards/medals, close quarters and limited space, humidity, poor air quality, crewmen hygiene (1 brief shower every 10 days, no laundry), boat stench, boredom, social isolation, … — most Navy sub skippers tended to be lenient regarding regulations while their boat was underway.
Period photos, rare filmed footage and written accounts depict all kinds of outfits being worn by patrolling sub crews. Sleeveless USN chambray work shirts, cut-off dungarees, skivvies or shirtless, no covers, private-purchase clothes… with the added unusual look of bushy beards and wild non-reg hairdos after long patrols. Officers simply wore khakis.
Because of the known risks shared by all submarine crews, on both side of the WW2 conflict, the level of respect for the enemy was generally high between Navies.
A Sub patrol duties spanned from directly engaging a man-of-war, sinking supply ships, spying on convoys, tracking enemy activity, inserting invading land troops on remote beaches, extracting scouting parties, rescuing downed air pilots (aka “lifeguarding zoomies” in submariners jargon, 504 airmen rescued in WW2), etc… The levels of stealth vs. full open confrontation giving away a sub’s location obviously differed in all those missions.
“Formality did not flourish aboard submarines where performance counted more than appearance.”
David A. Jones “US Silent Service, Dolphins & Combat Insignia 1924-1945”
During WW2, many US Navy subs were sent on “Search & Rescue” missions, with the task of picking up downed airmen or stranded surface ship crews lost at sea. Friends (allies) and foes (enemy forces) could then end-up on the same boat — literally —, heading back to Sub Base, or for the nearest POW camp. Collecting an eclectic mix of enemy uniforms as souvenirs was not uncommon. After a sub-to-sub battle at sea, a victorious US Navy sub crew may find itself underway homebound with U-Boat prisoners on board…
A famous photo series of the captured German U-Boat U-175 crew aboard the USCGC Spencer in 1943 shows another uniform swap practice, with some of the rescued Kriegsmariners warming up in a range of US Navy deck jackets.

Our mfsc fictitious story:
Mixing design elements and tailoring influences from several sub/surface Naval forces (a range of International Navies: US, British, French, Australian, German…), we are revisiting the approach of our original 2008 mfsc “Naval Clothing Tailor” story, and applying it to a fictional US Navy Submariner (pronounced subma-rEE-ner, and not sub-MAriner) during his deployments in the Pacific Fleet Submarines and Submarine Force Atlantic.
While at Sub Base or on leave in exotic locations, our fictitious “Bubblehead” (as surface sailors known as “Skimmers” affectionately nickname submariners) would get custom uniforms made, blending civilian and military styles, regulation and non-reg fabrics, and mixing American, Australian, European, or Axis naval uniform styles.
For FW2024, our “Bubblehead” seabag consists of:
1) FAIRWATER Duffle Coat (JP):
ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by traditional vintage British duffle coats, 1940s Royal Navy issued duffle coats, and original 1941 USN Submarine HBT wool jackets.
Fabric: Double-layer (double cloth) HBT wool, 30 Oz., charcoal color. With wear, the wide-weave herringbone pattern will gradually appear. Milled in Japan. Fabric inspired by ultra-rare original 1941 USN Navy Submarine coats.
Specs:
* Hip-length.
* Round collar with chinstrap.
* Fully unlined, all clean seams, twill backing tape.
* Wood toggles, twisted linen rope.
* Two concealed chest pockets.
Sizing: CL wears sample Medium (may wear Small in prod.)
Note: The Fairwater (or “Conning Tower”, or “Sail”) of a submarine is the command room (or “brain center”), the small “tower” structure on top of the boat, mostly known to old war movie watchers as the place the periscope comes out of (“Up scope!!”), with the classic Hollywood scene of a tense radarman monitoring the green oscillating ping of enemy presence on a black screen, “watching the sound”!
2) TORPEDO Jacket (USA):
ETA: TBD
Pattern: Loosely inspired by WW2 U-Boat Kriegsmarine reefer-style leather jackets, and based on an American vintage 1930s-40s civilian sportswear leather jacket.
Shell: Veg-tan black tea-core cowhide. Same grade as MF® Campus “Stallion” and Ranch Blouse “Ringo”.
Body lining: NOS woven plaid cotton flannel (sleeve lining: NOS woven cotton dobby stripe)
Specs:
* High five-button front style.
* Notched lapel with “stand collar” option.
* Arcuate front yokes.
* Double hip flap pockets.
* 30s style split-back expansion gusset (action-back).
* Half-belt back.
* Corrozo wood buttons/keyhole button holes.
* Gusseted button cinch cuffs.
Sizing: CL will potentially wear 38 (Medium), TBD.
Note: Charles A. Lockwood, iconic figure in WW2 US Navy submarine history, and adored by both his men and superiors, had his first command in 1919 on an ex-German sub U-97, in order to evaluate enemy U-Boats performances.)
3) BRIDGE Sweater (JP):
ETA: End Sept 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage 1960s USN Deck wool knit sweaters (No. DSA-1-6978-T-65)
We replaced the original navy blue wool knit with indigo cotton knit, extended cuff length and adjusted the fit.
Fabric: 100% cotton knit, indigo-dyed. Milled in Japan.
Specs:
* Traditional high neck naval style, ribbed knit.
* Slim fit, can be worn as layer under overshirt.
* Seamless ribbed waistband.
* Long early style foldable ribbed knit cuffs.
Sizing: CL wears Small.
Note: The “Bridge” part of a submarine is the top of the Fairwater/Conning Tower, where the boat is controlled when on the surface.
4) SKIPJACK Overshirt (JP):
ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage sportswear outdoor wool overshirts (Eddie Bauer, Woolrich, etc), revisited.
Fabric: fancy 50/50 cotton/wool narrow shuttle loom selvedge denim, 15.5 Oz. Warp = 100% cotton indigo yarn. Weft = 100% dark grey wool yarn. White with red line selvedge ID, with selvedge concealed inside cuffs. Milled in Japan.

* Double chest pockets, yoke flap.
* Cotton twill tape collar/button placket facing.

ETA: Mid Oct 2024
Pattern: inspired by vintage 1960s USN navy blue wool Trousers, Undress Blues, zipper fly, wrap leg. Classic 1930s-40s style wide leg silhouette.

Mister Freedom® Ranch Blouse “RANDALL”, B-Stock
Made (and stained!) in USA
Our QC (Quality Control) Team recently noticed random small dark spots on a few Randalls from our storage facility… Upon closer inspection, we realized that because stock jackets are stored folded in half, individually wrapped in plastic bags with a protective sheet of paper in the middle and boxed-up, some of the brass snaps and copper rivets in contact with the natural veg-tan leather had left button-size oxidation marks. Wrap paper had shifted during transport, at times exposing snaps/rivets to the hide. Never a dull moment in clothing manufacturing…
The small spots do not take away from the garment, but they are definitely noticeable on a fresh out of the box jacket. The units that did not pass QC are now available as B-Stock.
The oxydation marks on a B-Stock jacket are mostly located on one arm (the one folded touching the snaps), with a few occasional points of contact on the front panel.
We have taken photos/macros of a range of Randalls B-Stock, clearly showing the cosmetic flaws on a representative grouping — actually highlighting the “worst case scenario” of staining.
Note that with normal wear, exposure to the elements and conditioning, the blemishes will easily subside and gradually blend-in the leather.
In the good old “Adapt, Improvise, Overcome” attitude necessary to one’s life constant Goat Rodeo — apparently not limited to garment manufacturing on this fine 2024 year —, I am in the middle of processing one of the B-Stock Randall, a specimen code-named 38A. This blogpost will document how to turn a lemon into lemonade with an easy DIY “Sunshine” process. I was actually relieved to see the oxidation marks almost fully disappear within a week or so of outside sun exposure. Will keep updating this post as 38A gets to the point of conditioning etc.
Expecting nothing short of fabulous in the outcome!
To jump start a natural patina, take a look at our in-house method for suntanning the MF® “Sunshine” leather jackets. Note that I usually do it Rambo-style and hose down the (stuffed) jacket on day one, instead of wiping it with a damp cloth.
Below is a brief recap of the MF® “official” protocol:
HOW TO SUNSHINE YOUR OWN MISTER FREEDOM® LEATHER JACKET:
We at Mister Freedom® do not believe in factory-distressed garments (sandpaper/sand-blasting/laser/hard-wash/chemicals/etc), and recommend a more DIY “organic” approach to kick-start a cool natural patina.
The whole process of tanning your brand new MF® natural veg-tan leather jacket is a bit more involved than just sticking it on a hanger in the sun, and watch it magically morph into a golden beauty…
The desirable warm orange tones characteristic of old vintage “cossack” type jackets, like our classic Campus Jacket, are usually the result of 90 years of wear, neglect, exposure to the elements, and not just suntanning. Additionally, while exposure is key, if the garment is left too long outside, the sun is more likely to bleach out the golden tones than to darken them. Timing is important, and none of the process is an exact science.
Our friend John VEB V has documented his journey with his own Campus early on, and with outstanding results. We recommend a similar procedure:
1) Set the veg-tanned Campus outside, on a bust form. Stuff the arms and body to avoid un-natural tan lines and fold marks. Let the jacket sit in the sun for several days, rotating it around, exposing all covered areas (under collar, arm pits, side gussets, etc…) From its initial natural pale pink color, a ‘copper pink’ will gradually develop, aka suntan.
2) After some time (1-3 weeks) — depending on local weather and according to visible results — generously wipe the entire jacket with a clean, damp cloth. This tends to bring the skin side of the leather “to life”, somewhat sealing it from future water spots. Each leather panel will react differently to water, some slightly shrinking, some slightly stretching, creating natural torquing and subtle seam puckering.
Briefly trying the jacket on to set some natural creases is an option at this stage, but stuffing/shaping it again is a key step.
3) Let the sun do its thing again for several days, occasionally moving the jacket around.
4) When the leather has taken a darker tone and looks ‘thirsty’, condition the entire jacket by hand-rubbing every panel and seams with a combination of Pecard Leather Dressing, saddle conditioner, and our own secret sauce. Rub, rub, rub… making sure to not apply conditioner to the corduroy facing nor to the flesh side.
5) Let the sun dry-up the leather again, and the conditionner soak in, then, if needed, repeat steps above according to results and desired effect…
Note that each leather jacket will react differently to this entire “Sunshine” suntanning process. Results are according to the specifics of the hides used in the construction, which part of a hide each panel is cut from, the leather grain, the amount of conditioning and rubbing, length of exposure, UV levels, etc. Some hides tan much faster than others, some develop warmer tones than others, giving each jacket its own character.
The above process can take months, but the outcome is always rewarding. And don’t forget to wear your MF® leather jacket without moderation!

Mister Freedom® CALIFORNIAN Lot54 Reissue (Lot54R), NOS Cone Mills XUV Selvedge denim, 12 Oz.
mfsc SS2024 SPORTSMAN Catalog
Made in USA
They are back!
The anticipated reissue of our very first MF® CALIFORNIAN blue jeans, an original vintage-inspired five-pocket pattern initially released in 2010, is finally out.
Same classic straight leg cut with traditional mid-rise, same trims, and same vintage New Old Stock (NOS) denim fabric.
We called that cut “Lot54” at the time, a nod the general silhouette/image of the “BRMC” blue jeans featured in The Wild One (1954).
To quote Johnny Stabler, “Now, listen, ya don’t go any one special place. That’s cornball style…Ya just go.” Snap.
Our revived traditional five-pocket design was obviously heavily-inspired by a combo of old Lee®/Levis®/Wrangler® classics, twisted MF® style.
The pair of Lot54 I wore at the time — I had much fewer MF® five-pocket options to grab from the closet back in 2010, so I went hard on those — is one of my favorite in my stash of Californians today. I save them for special occasions, and affectionately call them my “Sunday jeans”. That splash of red paint on the right leg is from the original MF® HQ facade facelift…
After much hunting around in local LA warehouses, we were lucky enough to score some forgotten yardage of the exact same Cone Mills selvedge denim of the original Lot54s, a coded “XUV” 12 Oz. indigo denim twill milled by Cone’s White Oak factory in Greensboro, North Carolina, when it was still operating. After 112 years of loyal service to the Denim and Fashion Industry, that facility notoriously closed in 2017, victim of corporate greed and offshoring fueled by a global audience’s thirst for cheaper goods. Whayagonnado.
If you’re into a classic pair of selvedge jeans with an old school silhouette, cut from vintage NOS USA-milled denim, sewn in USA, and with promising fabric evo potential, the MF® CALIFORNIAN Lot54R (reissue) may not be a bad choice.
The Mister Freedom® CALIFORNIAN Lot54R (reissue) are designed and made in California, CA in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co. Cut from NOS Cone Mills premium selvedge denim milled in USA.

SIZING/FIT:
The Californian Lot54R jeans come UN-WASHED and are cut so that actual measurements match the labeling after an initial cold soak/line dry. We recommend the usual protocol before wearing:
- Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
- Machine spin dry and line dry, or drip dry.
- Wear briefly before fully-dry to shape and set creases, then hang until fully dry.
The Lot54R are considered true-to-size. See our MF® Californian cut/fit references here.
At 5’7 ~145 Lbs., I opted for my current W30 waist size, for a snug waist and classic generous 1950s-60s leg.
I’m going un-hemmed and un-cuffed with these.
The size that will work best for you depends on how you like your jeans to fit. Please refer to our size chart and measuring method.
A tagged W32 will most-likely be the right size for an individual with an approximate measured waist of +/- 32 inches, and with average body proportions. Note that your natural waist is a bit bellow belly button level, not bellow the hips.
CARE for your MF® denim jeans:
Wash when necessary, as with other premium denim garments.
We recommend turning the jeans inside-out to avoid potential marbling of the denim fabric. Wash separately from light-colored garments.
Machine wash with cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry. Using hot water/heat dryer may result in excessive and irreversible shrinkage.
Note that boiling your jeans will turn the leather patch into instant beef jerky, and attaching a new patch on an already-mounted rear pocket is about as easy as wrangling a pack of feral jackrabbits.
Available from www.misterfreedom.com, our Los Angeles red brick HQ, and fine retailers around the World.

SS2024 mfsc Sportsman Catalog.
Made in USA.
Our original RANCH BLOUSE design — a Mister Freedom® unisex spin on denim golden era “trucker” jackets, a Type-I-meets-Type-II type thing — remains pretty much unchanged from its 2010 inception: round A-1 style collar, unique lower slanted chest pockets with single pocket flap, “M” stitching on pockets, pleated front with signature arrowhead darts stitching, 30s-style buckle back etc…
Our denim jacket definitely has a 1930s~1940s flare, with its old-school design, period natural waist “boxy” cut and trim fit, and traditional workwear details.

To complement one’s collection of hillbilly tuxedoes, the crazy design team at Mister Freedom® is now releasing the classic RANCH BLOUSE in a traditional indigo blue selvedge denim perfectly matching its Californian Lot64 OG23 blue jeans pardner!
This handsome 12.75 Oz organic fabric — New Old Stock from Cone Mills — has a specific vibrant indigo hue reminiscent of older loomstate Levi’s 501® jeans that have been sitting for years on Army & Navy surplus stores’ shelves.
For those into denim fades, this indigo will chip fairly quickly with normal wear/washes, and, although not bound to yield high contrast “whiskers”, the fabric will deliver a very eye-pleasing palette of blues in one’s personal wear pattern.
The connaisseur will also appreciate that the selvedge ID on this fancy denim consists of a white and blue stripe, where the blue part is actual indigo! So, watch that selvedge fade.
My pair of Californian Lot64 OG23 — worn on and off for about a year, yard duty and all, fully washed a few times — started showing promising signs of patina quite early on.
This matching MF® RANCH BLOUSE will now require quite a bit of jig dancing to catch up, but I look forward to the results. And who doesn’t like to cut-a-rug on Dueling Banjos anyways.
Alternatively, have a partner do all the work, and just take full credit later on IG.
The MF® RANCH BLOUSE, OG23 “NOS Cone Mills organic denim” edition, is designed and manufactured in California by Mister Freedom®, in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co.
SPECS:

Under collar & pocket facing: NOS cotton-linen crosshatch “Player” indigo denim.

* Round-type collar, A-1 style.
* Period natural waist “boxy” cut and classic vintage silhouette.
* Pleated front with original MF® arrowhead dart stitching.
* Original and unique lower slanted chest pockets, single pocket flap.

* Proudly made in USA in a small family-owned factory.
SIZING/FIT:
The MF® RANCH BLOUSE in OG23 denim comes UN-WASHED and is cut so that actual measurements match the labeling after an initial cold soak/line dry. We recommend the usual protocol before wearing:
- Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
- Machine spin dry and line dry.
- Wear briefly before fully-dry to shape and set creases, then hang until fully dry.
This jacket is considered true-to-size.
At 5’7 ~145 Lbs, I went with a comfortable 38, my usual size in that pattern.
The size that will work best for you depends on how you like your clothes to fit, and on body proportions. Please refer to size chart or email sales@misterfreedom.com to dial your sizing in.
CARE:
Launder when needed.
We recommend turning indigo blue/denim garments inside out to avoid marbling during laundering. Machine wash, cold water, gentle cycle, eco-friendly mild detergent and line dry.
Please note that dark indigo might cause color transfer, and potentially “bleed” on light-colored garments, furniture, and skin. This indigo color “crocking” is temporary.
Potential attractive patina will develop according to one’s activities, and frequency of wear/wash cycles.

Mister Freedom® RANGER Shirt, Cone Mills “Midnight” Indigo Twill.
mfsc SS2023 Sportsman Catalog.
Made in USA.
One could say that we are quite fond of the RANGER Shirt pattern, since we have, at this point, cut it in about 150 different fabrics since the original 2015-2016 NOS Madras release.
This versatile and timeless pattern is a Mister Freedom® take on classic 1930s-40s workwear-type shirting, a straight forward vintage utilitarian style with the de rigueur chinstrap and side gussets, double box-pleat chest pockets and contrast white poplin button placket.
For this release, we opted for a snazzy “Midnight” indigo twill — indigo warp x black weft, wide loom — fancy New-Old-Stock yardage milled by the original Cone Mills White Oak plant, Greensboro, NC. This all-cotton 7 Oz. twill has a deep dark indigo color face, and will age gracefully with normal wear/wash cycles.
If the ‘Ranger’ name hints at rugged Park and Forest Rangers and the early days of Conservationism, our “Midnight” Ranger is as comfortable in the woods, at the office, on a date, around town, or at home.
The Mister Freedom® Ranger Shirt Cone Mills “Midnight” Indigo Twill is designed and made in California, CA in collaboration with Sugar Cane Co. Cut from NOS fabric milled in USA.
SPECS:
FABRICS:
100% cotton 7 Oz. “Midnight” indigo twill, indigo warp x black weft, wide loom, New Old Stock Cone Mills fabric milled in USA.

* Original Mister Freedom® pattern, inspired by 1930s-40s workwear shirting and vintage utilitarian styles.
* Trim fit.
* Double chest pockets, inverted box-pleat, red bartack accents.

SIZING/FIT:
The Mister Freedom® Ranger Shirt “Midnight” Indigo comes RAW/unwashed. It is cut so that the measurements match the labeling after an initial cold soak/line dry. We recommend this usual protocol before wearing:
* Cold soak for about 30-40mn, with occasional hand agitation.
* Machine spin dry cycle, then line dry.
At 5.7’ ~145 lbs, I opted for a MEDIUM for a rather trim fit. Note that I tend to be a SMALL in most mfsc shirts lately.
Again, this Ranger Shirt “Midnight” Twill runs a bit small, some may consider sizing up, understanding that what will work best for you depends on your body type and how you like your clothes to fit.
Please refer to our sizing chart reflecting soaked measurements (= 30mn cold soak, spin dry and line dry.)
CARE:
Machine wash on DELICATE, cold water, mild eco-friendly detergent. Hang dry.
